In Warwickshire ice sheets and meltwater left spreads of sands, gravels and glacial till, changing landscapes and river courses. In warmer periods, forest and grasslands supported early animals and ancestral man. Spend the morning learning why and how these changes occurred, and how the fossils and rocks in these deposits are identified. After lunch we will visit internationally important sites around Bubbenhall, to see evidence of the ice sheet which covered the Midlands 450,000 years ago. In the Bytham river gravels at Waverley Wood pit, we will find far travelled pebbles and perhaps fragments of the teeth, tusks and bones of some of the animals which lived on the forests and grasslands. Hand axes from Heidleberg man have been found here.
