Perdita woman: Jane Truesdale

Biography

The identity of the compilers of Beinecke Osborn MS b.188 is not completely certain. This manuscript is in two main hands. The first is that of an unnamed man who knew a Dr. Burton (possibly Hezekiah Burton) and the second is that of his daughter who married a Mr. Truesdale. A note in another hand on fols 63r-v states that until that page the handwriting has been her husband's, and that to the end of the manuscript from fol. 64r onward the hand is her daughter Truesdale's. This daughter may be the Jane Truesdale who was the second wife of Thomas Truesdale, Esquire. According to a clipping from an unidentified source (see item 1.6) pasted onto a flyleaf, which describes his funeral monument and works of charity, Thomas Truesdale was a lawyer who lived in Stamford, Lincolnshire. His first wife, Elizabeth Tooley, died on 26 January 1683 in childbirth. Jane must have married Thomas Truesdale sometime after that date. Her memorial tablet (described in the clipping) mentions her date of death, 10 January 1704, but there is no mention of any children. Item 12.2 in the manuscript consists of notes from a sermon preached at Stamford, suggesting that it is reasonable to link "my daughter Truesdale" with the Jane Truesdale who lived in Stamford. Her father's name, and thus her maiden name, are uncertain.
