Warwick CAN/DeviceNet Lab moves to new frontiers - Industrial EtherNet Research.

There are a lot of interesting issues concerning industrial Ethernet technologies. We at Warwick are turning our priorities toward research in this area. We already have a small research team studying this technology, but we need support to continue.

We are making the bid for EPSRC funding, which is matched funding to industrial partners’ contributions. The partners’ contribution can be in the form of in-kind contribution or cash.

EPSRC is the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council that encourages UK academic institutions to embark on innovative research programmes that are relevant to the current and future technologies of the supporting industrial partners.

I am asking all the companies that have a vested interest in industrial Ethernet technology to support this research programme through:

Contribution of equipment and/or product to set up the

EtherNet/IP demonstrator/test bed for performing research work.

Contribution of manpower and expertise to help set up the

EtherNet/IP demonstrator.

Nominal cash contribution (optional) according to company size.

The novel research performed will be in areas that are of concern to the contributing vendors, and the research will produce results that will improve the controls and e-business structures of the end-users.

This research centre will be set up to disseminate information about Industrial Ethernet to UK (and European) automation and manufacturing process industries. The Dissemination will be in the form of:

Demonstrator/test bed open to public display.
Set-up of Warwick Industrial Ethernet Research Centre web site and information centre.
Papers will be produced for conferences and journals.
Research Fellow will be writing up results and analysis in a published thesis as a requirement for M.Sc. (or Ph.D.) by research.
Unpublished thesis from full-time M.Sc. students involved in EtherNet/IP projects will be available for review.
Seminars at Warwick on EtherNet/IP.

The Warwick research centre will display graphics of contributing companies. While the cash contribution from supporting partners is optional, the size of graphic will reflect the level of contribution.

Please have a look at the proposal, and let me know if there interested in supporting this programme, and how you could support it. If you are not interested please let me know so that I can remove your companies name from the list of possible industrial partners in Appendix A of the attachment. Also, let me know if there are any additional areas that should be researched under this programme, or if there is any listed that should be eliminated.

Note that all the companies in Appendix A show UK addresses. The EPSRC will only match in-kind contribution if the company has a UK address. Since much of the in-kind contribution from most of the companies will be in the form of manpower, it is best to deal with companies locally. Some of you could be very helpful if you could give me the name of the best contact for you company in the UK.

The funding levels proposed are a rough estimate, but the concept is to get a bit from many companies with UK interest. This research is available to benefit vendors and end-users in the EtherNet/IP community. Please help us make it possible through your contribution in the form of consultation manpower, equipment and products, and good old cash.
