This is an ESRC-funded project that evaluates
experiences of Muslim prisoners in England and France. Fellow
researchers are based in CADIS, Paris (Centre for Sociological Analysis
and Intervention) and field work has been undertaken in three prisons
in each country.
The study involves a comprehensive assessment
of what it means to be a Muslim prisoner and the extent to which
religious and cultural needs are being met by the prison systems
in the respective countries. The work explores discrimination, prejudice,
racism and Islamophobia as experienced by the Muslim prisoner sample
as well as the functioning of the prison Chaplaincy and an assessment
of the 'multi-faith' or 'inclusive' work ethic.
