METHOD

A semi-structured interview schedule was designed which focused on key issues relating to perceptions about:

  • the experience of being a contract researcher,
  • opportunities for progression,
  • training and development needs,
  • the advantages and disadvantages of working in contract research.

Our objective was to interview a range of researchers who had responded to the 1998 survey, according to age, gender, discipline and type of contract.

Contract researchers were contacted by e-mail and invited to participate in an interview, lasting 40 minutes on average. To date, we have interviewed 75 contract researchers in 7 different SHEIs, and a final fieldwork visit is planned for February 2000, encompassing a further 25 interviews.
