Volodya Ilyin

Volodya Ilyin
Volodya Ilyin is director of the Syktyvkar research group, although he is spending much of the 1996-7 academic year based in Valdosta, Georgia (US). Volodya is an intrepid explorer who likes nothing better than to holiday in war zones, at least since Marina forbade him to continue his death defying mountaineering exploits. At the age of eighteen he and a friend went for a short walk in Abhazia and got lost for two weeks. They had only a map of the Soviet Union torn from a school atlas as their guide. Volodya is an example to us all, but we are not sure about his leadership. Volodya also edits the journal Rubezh to which you can subscribe and is a specialist in Chinese massage, for which you can also subscribe.

Marina Ilyina Marina Ilyina was born in 1957 in Arkhangelsk. As a child she moved with her parents to the town of Sosnogorsk in the northern Komi Republic. In 1975 she enrolled as a student of philosophy at Syktyvkar State University, where she was drawn to the lectures on the history of the CPSU given by Vladimir Ilyin, whom she then married. She graduated in 1980, having spent two years in Leningrad with her husband, and became an editor in the publishing department of Syktyvkar State University, becoming chief of the university press in 1990. Marina has conducted ethnographic research in a wide-range of enterprises in the Komi Republic, alongside her continuing editorial work and caring for her two children (and for her unreconstructedly chauvinistic but disarmingly charming husband). In contrast to her husband, Marina always hated the thought of travelling, until her first visit to Britain in 1993, since when she travels at every opportunity.
