MSS. 292/80/3 - 82.40/7 Amalgamation 1923-60The following sequence of files highlights attempts by the Trades Union Congress and unions to bring about amalgamation and/or closer working. The first few files show Trades Union Congress initiatives in the early 1920s. The usual practice was for the Trades Union Congress to start proceedings by calling a conference, which was followed by a series of meetings. In the later files proceedings were usually initiated by one trade union in conjunction with the Trades Union Congress. Throughout the period the same trade unions kept returning to the issue, ie the Tailors. It is obvious from the files that amalgamation was a long and slow process which usually did not succeed. The files mostly contain correspondence and reports of the various meetings and conferences. Occasionally rules, annual reports, amalgamation schemes are found. This was held in February 1923 in Manchester. All interested unions were divided into four groups to discuss the issue. By 1925 the talks had come to nothing. There was a further attempt in 1927 to revive the issue.
