Return to the Table of Contents Administrative/Biographical HistoryGeorge Drake was born in Sheffield in 1839 and joined the Amalgamated Society of Engineers on August 1st 1859. His work took him around England, France and Germany. He began his career as a fitter, then moved into small-arms tool making and eventually into the safety cycle business until his death in August 1899. On the fly leaf is the following "G Drakes Book Present Address: 6 Trinity Terrace College Park Lewisham Kent March 1887". The diary was used as an address book and for memoranda, with details of his work in hand in 1894, and recipes, sketches of cycle parts, etc. At the end Drake gives details of his working career from 1859 to 12 June 1899, and there is a list of his three children and their dates of birth.
