Scope and Content

Six large cartons and seven boxes of unsorted archives, nine boxes of records including cycle club records and catalogues, three boxes of correspondence, files of records respecting racing, etc., thirty boxes of press cuttings, a scrapbook, six boxes of photographs, and printed magazines, etc., 20th century. Included are original drawings of Frank Patterson, who was a cycling artist working from at least 1901. His evocative sketches of the halcyon days of touring by bicycle delighted devotees of cycling and the general public alike, and by 1994 there was a Frank Patterson Appreciation Society, which helped to mount an exhibition of his drawings in Folkstone. He was also running a correspondence school in 1934, to advertise which he produced a booklet entitled "Patterson School of Sketching".
