Training
On this page you can find details of the training sessions we hold throughout the week. There are six training sessions a week, offering a variety of opportunities to develop lifesaving skills. Come along to whichever interest you most, although the more you come to the more you will get out of it!
Our Monday training sessions are entirely focused on improving and maintaining fitness
levels. A unique programme specifically designed to work on muscles required for the
lifesaving speed events will usually be written by the speeds Training Officer (Laura
Rumsey) each week. We recognise that sometimes lectures get in the way of training
sessions, however, it is still important to keep your fitness up. If you can't make
this training session but would still like to do the set please click
here.
Tuesday 17:00-19:00
Tuesdays are our dry training session which takes place in Westwood Games Hall's
Lecture Theatre and is currently being taken by our SERC Training Officer (Adam
Martin). The first half of this session will be dedicated to general first aid
skills ranging from learning how to tie slings to practicing CPR. The second half
of this training session will be where we put those skills into practice with
various dry team based SERCs (Simulated Emergency Response Competitions). Dry SERCs
are also an important part of BULSCA competitions.
Wednesday 13:30-15:30
This is the pool time set aside for courses and qualifications. If you are interested
in obtaining Bronze, Silver or Gold level Lifesaving, CPR, First Aid and Lifesaving
sport qualifications, the Course Coordinator (Daniel Jacklin) will be running classes
at this time. Please feel free to attend even if you have no prior lifesaving experience.
For more information see the Qualifications page. We
will also be giving NPLQ training hours every month for the whole year. This will be
free of charge for all members. Even though this is primarily for qualifications
training, anyone is welcome to come join in or help out. It is likely the use of this
training slot will change to general competition training when there are no qualifications
taking place.
Thursday 13:00-15:00 and Friday Lunchtime
These training sessions are our speed event training sessions, however, they will only run in terms 1 and 2. Times will be arranged to fit in around members’ lectures. We will be working on all the BULSCA speed events as well as gradually introducing the more unusual speed events we will be competing in at the national championships in March. Please note that Friday sessions will not be taking place in term 1.
Saturday 10:30-12:30
This training session is our main competition training session. We regularly compete against other universities in the BULSCA league. For more information see the competitions page. We will cover all the speed events (see the competitions section for further details) as well as practicing SERCs in the pool. If you are interested in competing at lifesaving this would definitely be a good session to come to.
