THE SOCIAL THEORY CENTRE

The Social Theory Centre in the Faculty of Social Studies was established in 1996 and is based in the Department of Sociology. Its aim is to provide a focus for research in social theory at the University by encouraging the development of research projects, by enhancing co-operation across Departments within the University as well as with researchers from other institutions in the UK and abroad, and by facilitating the dissemination of research findings.

Among the activities planned for the first two years are a workshop series on Social theory and social transformations, a joint project with the Centre for Comparative Labour Studies on The restructuring of labour conventions in Europe and the launching of a social theory paper series.

Furthermore, the Social and Political Thought Seminar Series is affiliated to the MA in Social and Political Thought and integrated into the Social Theory Centre. It is open to all students and staff interested in German Idealism, Hegelian and post-Hegelian thought, Frankfurt School Marxism/Critical Theory, modern Jewish Thought and Psychoanalysis.
